In June the Iraqi army capitulated to the Islamic State IS , despite having a significant numerical advantage over the militant group an estimated 30, soldiers against IS fighters.
This allowed IS to seize large swathes of territory in northern and western Iraq in just a matter of weeks, including the key cities of Mosul, Tikrit and several sections of Ramadi. The Iraqi government eventually responded to the threat of IS and has regained all of the territory previously lost to the group. Baghdad relied heavily on the state-sponsored Popular Mobilization Forces Hashd al-Shaabi , an umbrella group of largely Shia militias, some of which receive direct support from Iran.
At the same time US-led airstrikes against IS, which began in August , successfully weakened militant positions. Iran has also carried out a series of airstrikes in Iraq, although these are operationally independent of the international coalition. By February IS had lost around 40 percent of its territory - including the key city of Ramadi - and since then the Iraq-led forces have also recaptured the city of Fallujah.
A major offensive on Mosul began in late, with Iraqi forces capturing the eastern districts of the city by the end of January The Iraqi forced eventually announced the liberation of the city in July This has been followed by further operations to recapture the last few areas of IS-control, including Tal Afar and Hawija. Although they no longer holder significant territory, IS cells continue to carry out attacks against the security forces and civilians in Iraq.
Much of the instability in Iraq has its roots in the centuries-old tension between Shia and Sunni Muslims. Some of the worst outbreaks of violence have occurred when political or insurgent groups have actively inflamed sectarianism. Following the US-led invasion of Iraq in , and the removal of Saddam Hussein's regime, sectarian and political violence in Iraq increased significantly. In tens of thousands of people were killed in intercommunal violence between Sunni and Shia militias, including the Mahdi Army and the Badr Organisation.
